Today for our Musistic University recording tutorial, Jacob compares the WAV and MP3 formats and shows you the data that is lost in an MP3 file.

I bounced a wav file and an mp3 file from the same session and I’ll show you the information that is lost.

How I set this up was on the mp3 track I flipped the polarity on it so that the same signal will get canceled out. And whatever is left over that you hear is the information that is lost in an mp3 file.

You can hear in the example the sound that is lost when using the mp3 file format instead of a wav file. What you heard when the gain was activated that was the data that was being lost.
